NAIROBI , June 13 (Xinhua)-- Kenya on Tuesday finally cleared anydoubts and confirmed it will skip the Youth Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Nassau, Bahamas in July.

Minister Hassan Wario ended any little hope that Kenya wouldcompete in the games, reserved for former British colonies, sayingthe government was not in a position to sponsor a Kenya team, instead it will focus its efforts in organizing the IAAF Under 18Championships in Nairobi from July 12-16.

"I'm advised to inform you that we will not be in a position tosponsor the team because most of our resources have been committedtowards IAAF World U18 Championships, which will be hosted inNairobi. Consequently , Kenya will not send a team to the games,"said Wario in a letter to Kenya's Olympic body NOCK and signed bySports Permanent Secretary C. K Komen.

Kenya claimed a total of seven medals at the 2015 CommonwealthYouth Games in Samoa, which included four golds and threesilvers.

This year's edition is set be the largest international sportingevent ever staged in The Bahamas and the biggest-ever CommonwealthYouth Games, with up to 1,300 athletes aged 14 to 18 expected toparticipate.

In March NOCK Chairman Kipchoge Keino had raised the red flagsaying lack of finances as the reason behind the withdrawal andpledged to reconsider the issue should there be a change offortune.

"We are in a hard place financially and we can't afford to sendthe team to Bahamas. But we leave it open that should there be afinancier coming on board, then we may consider it again. But ifthere are no funds, then it is unfortunate that we will not betaking part in the games ," said Keino.

Critics may see this as a retaliatory attack to the Britishteam, who were the first to pull rag on Kenya last in February, when they announced their team will not be travelling to Nairobifor the IAAF World U18 Championships, which comes just a week tothe games in Nassau.

Other countries to have pulled out of the Nairobi championshipsare defending champions USA, Japan, New Zealand, Britain ,Australia, Canada and Switzerland.

Earlier, Kenya had pledged to select two teams for the twoevents with Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei confirming thatthe country will compete in both competitions. Enditem

CHICAGO, July 21 (Xinhua) -- More than one-third of young adult cancer survivors found it difficult to go back to normal life two years after initial diagnosis, a study of the University of Michigan (UM) in cooperation with Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands finds.

Researchers collected data from 215 cancer patients aged 14 to 39 who visited five medical facilities nationwide between March 2008 and April 2010.

They let patients complete a self-report measure of social functioning within the first four months of diagnosis, and again at 12 months and 24 months later.

Patients also answered questions about their social interactions with family and friends, psychological needs and mental health.

The study finds that 32 percent of the survivors consistently reported low social functioning , and some of them had been off treatment.

This could have stemmed from the transition from treatment to off-treatment survivorship, a time fraught with new challenges to a cancer survivor including the negative impact on finances, body image, work plans, relationship with spousesignificant other and plans for having children.

Moreover, those reporting low scores on social functioning also had high levels of distress, which possibly reflects an impaired ability to reintegrate into social activities due to the effects of cancer , the study showed.

"This finding highlights the need to screen, identify and respond to the needs of high-risk adult-young adolescent patients at the time of diagnosis and then monitor them over time," said Zebrack, an expert with the UM Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation. "They are likely the ones most in need of help in managing work, school and potentially problematic relationships with family members and friends."

The research also finds that young adult cancer patients benefit from support programs that put them in touch with other young adult cancer survivors, but do not feel helpful being in a support group with "people my grandma's age," said Olga Husson , lead author of the study and a researcher at Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

The study is the first of its kind seeking to understand the social functioning among adolescents and young adult cancer survivors, and is published online in the journal Cancer.
